Growing up I spent all my free time building sculptures, costumes, catapults, street luge cars, furniture, tree houses and everything in between. I also had a deep passion for art, especially\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fordbostwick.com\/forklift\">drawing<\/a><\/u>. After high school I studied architecture and sculpture at\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.edu\/academics\/undergraduate-majors-minors\/architecture\/\">Syracuse University<\/a><\/u>, and since graduating, have continued to pursue art and design. Though my projects and processes have gotten more sophisticated, I still feel like a kid exploring whatever excites me creatively.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"qa-item\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col qa-item-question\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"mob-sub-title\">D.LAB  <\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Tell us a little bit about your history with solid surface and how you became familiar with the material.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col qa-item-answer\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"mob-sub-title\"><p>FORD BOSTWICK<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>After graduating from architecture school I got a job at an unconventional architecture firm with a focus on fabrication called\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/situ.nyc\/\">Situ Studio<\/a><\/u>\u00a0based in Brooklyn. At Situ we have completed a number of projects using solid surface including saunas, hospital interiors, furniture, and large scale\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/situ.nyc\/fabrication\/projects\/three-saros-james-turrell\">fine art installations<\/a><\/u>. After using the material for several years and becoming familiar with its thermoforming properties, I began to think of and develop new possibilities for solid surface furniture.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"qa-item\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col qa-item-question\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"mob-sub-title\">D.LAB  <\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Of all the different \u201ccreative hats\u201d that you\u2019ve worn, which one fits the best?<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col qa-item-answer\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"mob-sub-title\"><p>FORD BOSTWICK<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>I do my best thinking as a\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/fordbostwick\/\">designer and builder<\/a><\/u>, but I try to maintain a dedicated fine art and\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thesideofabuilding\/\">photography<\/a><\/u>\u00a0practice. Bouncing between different creative projects helps keep everything feeling fresh, and occasionally unrelated projects inform one another and unlock new ideas.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"qa-item\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col qa-item-question\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"mob-sub-title\">D.LAB  <\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>How does a project start for you? Does creativity \u201cstrike\u201d, or is it more of a deliberate process?<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col qa-item-answer\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"mob-sub-title\"><p>FORD BOSTWICK<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>I think a creative spark comes when lots of subconscious thoughts snap together into a coherent idea. For me, most creative sparks happen after rigorously trying to understand a medium, whether it is\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/durasein.com\/ca\/surfaces\">solid surface<\/a><\/u>, wood, graphite, or film. If you put enough energy into understanding the medium and how it connects to you, culture and history, eventually that energy will coalesce into an idea for a great project.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"qa-item\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col qa-item-question\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"mob-sub-title\">D.LAB  <\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Any suggestions for designers or fabricators who are new to working with solid surface?<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col qa-item-answer\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"mob-sub-title\"><p>FORD BOSTWICK<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Try lots of different ideas and don\u2019t be afraid to make mistakes.\u00a0<u><a href=\"\/us\/surfaces\/\">Solid surface<\/a><\/u>\u00a0is such a unique and dynamic material. I recommend jumping to full scale prototypes as soon as possible and letting the\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/durasein.com\/ca\/basics\">material\u2019s properties<\/a><\/u>\u00a0inform the design as much as possible.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"qa-item\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col qa-item-question\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"mob-sub-title\">D.LAB  <\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Who do you feel you have learned the most from, so far in your career?<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col qa-item-answer\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"mob-sub-title\"><p>FORD BOSTWICK<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>My father is an architect and, from a young age, would take me to job sites to explore buildings under construction. It was really inspiring to see the guts and bones of buildings and all the thought and labor that goes into making them. Through these site visits, he taught me about construction and instilled in me a passion for architecture. We love visiting notable works of architecture and studying both the nitty gritty details and the deeper spiritual connection we have with them.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"qa-item\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col qa-item-question\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"mob-sub-title\">D.LAB  <\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>How does your view of solid surface differ when working with the material at an architectural scale vs. smaller, product design projects?<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col qa-item-answer\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"mob-sub-title\"><p>FORD BOSTWICK<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>I get most excited about designs where form and structure are resolved with a single material. For\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fordbostwick.com\/\">furniture<\/a><\/u>\u00a0and small objects, solid surface is strong enough to create dynamic forms while supporting itself.
