Women Shaping the Future of Durasein—Mirna Ulerio
In honor of Women’s History Month, we spoke with four women at Durasein whose perspectives, leadership, and expertise help shape the way we think about design, materials, and collaboration. Below, they share insights from their work, the lessons they’ve learned, and what inspires them most.
What first drew you to the design and materials industry?
MIRNA ULERIO
I’ve always loved beautiful spaces and the way materials can completely transform how a space feels. What really pulled me into this industry was realizing how collaborative it is, you get to work with designers and architects who have incredible vision. I love being part of that creative process.
Can you describe your role at Durasein and what a typical day looks like for you?
MIRNA ULERIO
As an A&D Spec Manager, my role is about building relationships with architects and designers and helping them discover how they can use Durasein materials in their projects. A typical day might include visiting design firms, doing presentations, dropping off samples, following up on projects or talking through different applications for our materials. No two days are exactly the same, which is something I really enjoy!
What do you enjoy most about working with architects, designers, and specifiers?
MIRNA ULERIO
Definitely the relationships and the creativity. Designers see things in such an inspiring way, and every project has its own story and challenges. I love being able to collaborate with them and help find material solutions that support their design vision.
What is one common challenge designers face when specifying materials, and how do you help solve it?
MIRNA ULERIO
One thing I see often is designers trying to balance aesthetics with performance. They want something beautiful, but it also has to be durable and work for the space. My role is to help guide that conversation, talking through the application, fabrication possibilities, and long-term performance so they can feel confident about their material choice.
What trends are you currently seeing in material specification or commercial design?
MIRNA ULERIO
I’m seeing a lot of interest in materials that combine design and performance. Especially in healthcare, hospitality, and workplace environments, designers want surfaces that are durable, and easy to maintain but that still feel warm and inviting. Color and texture are also becoming more important as designers look for ways to bring personality into spaces.
Is there a project or moment in your career that you’re especially proud of?
MIRNA ULERIO
Honestly, what makes me most proud are the relationships I’ve built over the years. Being able to support designers and architects on their projects and seeing those spaces come to life is incredibly rewarding. Even knowing I played a small part in helping make a project happen always feels special.
What advice would you give to women interested in pursuing careers in design, architecture, or manufacturing?
MIRNA ULERIO
Stay curious and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. This industry is full of opportunities and amazing people to learn from. Building relationships, asking questions and continuing to learn will open so many doors. And I think it’s really important that we continue supporting and encouraging other women in the industry as well.
